Do I have to audition on campus?

We would love to see you dance in person and meet you, but we understand that it may be difficult to arrange an audition time and travel to campus. You can submit a video online if it isn't possible for you to be here in person.

Should I submit my application to Dance at Illinois?

To be eligible to enter our BFA program, you must first apply to the University of Illinois. Fill out an online application and register for a spot at one of our audition sessions.

How much is tuition?

The Office of the Registrar maintains information on tuition and fees. Once you are admitted to the university and our program, your tuition is locked in and will never increase during four years of study as a dance major.

Can I get financial aid through the department?

Students who audition in October, January, or February are automatically considered for our Talented Student Tuition Awards, and other awards and scholarships are also available. The Office of Student Financial Aid will assist you in applying for other forms of financial support.

Can I minor in dance?

We do not offer a minor in dance, but you can major in dance and choose a minor in another field.

Where can I study abroad?

We have ongoing exchanges with Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in Israel. Many other options are open to our dancers through the programs of Illinois Abroad and Global Exchange.

What are the studios like?

For classes and rehearsals we have five studios with sprung floors, mirrors that can open or be closed, pianos, drum sets, and projection and computer equipment. Some feature natural light and views of nature, while others have state-of-the-art sound and lighting and the ability to be converted into a performance space.

What kind of music is used for dance technique classes?

Musicians provide live accompaniment for all of our modern and ballet classes. Classes such as jazz and hip hop will have recorded music.

What performance opportunities are offered to students?

We have five major productions at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts each year. You can also audition for site-specific works and student projects, try out for campus musicals, join a local studio and give recitals, or work with a campus dance club. First-year students through seniors can audition for performances and our annual choreographic showcase, Studiodance II.

"Students graduating the program . . . emerge as innovative artists, and, most importantly, they emerge as humans with a deeper awareness and sensitivity that belies their young ages. Kudos to the faculty. Something very right is happening here."
