Work
Alex is focused on exploring her own identity through her art. Identifying as an African
American woman comes through her creative work. During the summer of 2020 she was
inspired by the resiliency of being a woman. This inspiration turned into her creating her own
dance film entitled “An Army of Muses”. This dance film was created entirely via zoom and
came together beautifully. During the summer of 2021, Juneteenth was finally recognized as a
federal holiday. This moment made Alex proud to be an African American. To celebrate this
feeling she created a dance film entitled “An Ode to my Independence day”. This dance film was
a moment of pride for her as she was proud of her culture and everything it means to be African
American. Lastly, Alex realizes that her identity shapes the way she moves and teaches. She
takes her love of her identity and uses it to create safe spaces in her classrooms. When she
teaches she allows her students to tap into who they are as humans and what their cultures can
bring to the teachings.
