intro
The University of Illinois Department of Dance’s January Dance concert returns to Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Jan. 29–31 with a bold, genre-spanning program that blends fashion-inspired movement, powerful reflections on racial justice, and theatrical, otherworldly storytelling. Presented under the season theme “Black on Black: A Celebration of Black Dance,” the performance highlights the work of Black faculty, students, and guest artists through diverse choreographic voices and styles.
Audiences will experience everything from the playful, voguing-inspired satire of Alexandra Barbier’s The Way She Wears It to Nik Owens’ hyperathletic exploration of race and place, plus new works by Illinois alumnae Ty Lewis and Laina Reese Werner-Powell that channel ritual, resilience, joy, and revolution through movement. Read the full story in the Illinois News Bureau to learn more about the artists and inspirations behind the program — and reserve your tickets now to experience January Dance live.
